Estimation of Heritabilities and Genetic Correlations on Interleukin-2 and Interferon-¥ã in the Mouse

Abstract
This study was conducted to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations on immune traits in the mouse. A total of 115 offsprings, produced by mating 15 sires with 15 dams of ICR mice, was used for this study. Sera were separated and stored at -70¡É for IL-2 and IFN-¥ã concentration analyses. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. The IL-2 and IFN-¥ã contents were 0.28¡¾0.02 and 3.48¡¾0.15 pg/§¡, and the heritabilities of the traits from the sire component of variance were 0.353¡¾0.128 and 0.039¡¾0.106, respectively. 2. Estimates of phenotypic correlation between IL-2 and other factors, such as white blood cell, lymphocyte(%), and lymphocyte number were -0.449, 0.330 and -0.412, and genetic correlation coefficients for each items were -0.018, -0.124 and -0.034, respectively. 3. Estimates of phenotypic correlation between IFN-¥ã and other factors, such as white blood cell, lymphocyte(%), lymphocyte number and IL-2 were 0.287, -0.228, -0.276 and 0.500, and genetic correlation coefficients for each items in the order were -0.036, 0.042, -0.024 and -0.092, respectively. 4. Estimates of genetic correlation between lymphocyte number and other factors, such as white blood cell and lymphocyte(%) were 0.986 and -0.014, respectively. 5. Through the results of this study, it could be concluded that if the immune systems are fortified in mouse, IL-2 and White blood cell could be used as the markers in selection for the general heritability of the immune system.
